UFSC offers seven different programs in the field of languages and literature. Students looking to pursue studies in this field must choose among the following programs: Portuguese Language and Literature (day and evening classes), German Language and Literature (afternoon classes), French Language and Literature (morning classes), English Language and literature (afternoon classes), Italian Language and Literature (morning classes). The programs will focus on the language, literature and culture of the countries where the chosen language is spoken. In the fifth semester, students choose whether their degree will focus on teaching (licenciatura) or research (bacharelado). In the first option, students must take a teaching practice internship in public or private schools. In the second option, courses are focused on research and prepare students for the writing of a final research paper. The Department of Foreign Language and Literature also offers an undergraduate degree program in Executive Secretariat (evening classes).
Language and Literature graduates can work in primary and secondary education, as well as teaching in language schools and in preparation courses for university entrance examinations. Other career opportunities include interpretation in meetings and conferences, technical and literary translation, text revision and proofreading, and academic research in Literature and Linguistics.
The Executive Secretariat graduate can work as a secretary in national or international companies as well as as an interpreter in conferences and seminars. In the later stages of the program, students are usually requested to do an internship in private companies that deal with documents in English or with website translation.
