Automation and Control Engineering – Florianópolis Campus

20/03/2020 16:43

The automation of production activities, whether in agriculture, industry or in the service sector, is one of the main requirements for the economic development of the country and for its effective participation in the international market. The need for qualified professionals that have an interdisciplinary vision – indispensible to the automation processes – , and are able to use the new computer technologies adequately has led UFSC to create the pioneer Automation and Control Engineering program in 1990.

The program offers 72 seats every year and during the 5-year studies the future engineer acquires qualifications to work in Process Control, Manufacturing Automation, Industrial Computing and Robotics. The training prepares students for the design, implementation, use and maintenance of automated or to-be-automated production units. Engineering companies, software and equipment industries for industrial automation and other industries using such equipment are the potential workplace for this professional.

Curriculum
The Automation and Control engineering student at UFSC receives training with the following characteristics:

  • strong knowledge in mathematics, physics and computing;
  • general knowledge on electricity and mechanics (instrumentation and drive systems);
  • basic notions of economics, management and safety;
  • deep knowledge of:

          Process control: physical process modeling; analysis, design and synthesis of continuous and discrete controllers for linear and nonlinear feedback systems; modern techniques of multivariate control and optimization; control instrumentation;

        Industrial computing: digital systems and microprocessors; computer architectures; programmable logic controllers; software and computer system specification and design; programming languages and operating systems; real-time software; distributed computing systems and computer networks; databases; artificial intelligence and expert systems;

         Manufaturing automation: metal-mechanical manufacturing processes; product engineering elements (CAD/CAE, Group Technology); numerical control and programming of automated systems (CNC, DNC, robot, transport system); production management (MRP, JIT, quality management), process planning (CAPP, CAD / CAM); integrated manufacturing systems (FMS, CIM), modeling and performance evaluation of manufacturing systems;

                Robotics: basic concepts of robotics; advanced concepts of mobile robotics and artificial intelligence techniques.

The following aspects are also fundamental to the training of the Automation and Control engineer:

  • constant technological updating;
  • learning of computer-aided design, implementation and quality control techniques;
  • preparation for insertion and rapid adaptation in the industrial environment;
  • training guided by practical and creative activities.

The curricular internship and the final project (lasting one semester), which can be carried out in companies or in research & development laboratories, facilitate the last two aspects.

The program is closely linked to the Graduate Program in Automation and Systems Engineering (PPGEAS), which offers training at the master’s and doctoral levels.
