The historian is the only scholar concerned with society that deals systematically with time. They understand and critically analyze all the social, political, economic and cultural transformations from the perspective of time. History students and professionals must have an investigative spirit and a taste for reading.

UFSC History Program enables students to combine classical methods and theories with new practices for knowledge production and social criticism. For this, it offers a set of theoretical-methodological courses and promotes the discussion on these issues throughout the whole program.

Students also have access to a number of laboratories, where they can engage in research and outreach projects, do internships, and earn a scholarship from the Scientific Initiation Program or the Tutorial Education Program (PET-História). These include laboratories on: Indigenous History; Image and Sound Research; History, Health and Society; Immigration, Migration and Environmental History; Gender Studies and History; Social History of Work and Culture; Oral History; History and Art; Archaeology; Religiosity and Culture; and Memory, Collections and Heritage – where students deal with the preservation of documents.

Even though the program starts with courses in Ancient History, following a didactic chronological line towards Medieval History, Modern History and Contemporary History, since the early stages, students also turn their eyes to the relation with the present. Courses in the history of Brazil, the state of Santa Catarina, America and Africa are also included, as well as pedagogical courses, which are important for teacher training.

History students at UFSC can graduate with a teaching license, which expands their career opportunities in the job market. They can work as university professors or primary and secondary school teachers, conduct research in public and private institutions, give historical advice for film productions and other projects, as well as work in cultural tourism or in any project related to memory and heritage.
