Social Work

04/05/2016 12:33

The UFSC Social Work Program aims to prepare students for the social work practice departing from a critical analysis of the social reality in order to confront social inequalities.

This requires the development of special skills to act for the strengthening of egalitarian and democratic practices in the interpersonal and institutional scope, while at the same time confronting the mechanisms of oppression and reproduction of subalternity. It is essential that the social worker graduated from UFSC masters the political strategies of social mobilization in order to place popular participation as means and end of the process of ensuring social rights and the construction and implementation of public social policies.

It also requires mastery and application of techniques for designing, executing and evaluating plans, programs and projects in the social area, as well as of the dynamics of organizing, planning and managing benefits and services (i.e. visits, technical investigation, reports and information releases on Social Work matters), combining the professional specificity with the interaction in interdisciplinary teams. All this associated to the strategies of socialization of institutional information and of guidance to the population on identifying resources for meeting and defending their rights.

The Program develops theoretically critical social workers committed to the achievements and struggles of the working class, able to politicize demands and to strengthen popular participation for the breakdown of political subalternization processes.

It is structured in three sections: i) theoretical and methodological foundations of social life, ii) socio-historical foundations of Brazilian society, and ii) foundations of the social work practice. In the early stages, students take general courses, such as: Socio-Historical Formation of Brazil, Introduction to Sociological Theory, and Political Science. In the second half of the program, they take specific courses on Social Work matters. The curriculum also includes a supervised internship that must be carried out along three consecutive semesters, starting from the sixth semester, and a final project (TCC), which must be developed in the last semester.

Social Sciences

04/05/2016 12:31

UFSC Social Sciences program prepares sociologists, anthropologists and political scientists not only to develop academic research and produce knowledge about social relations, but also to conduct research and consulting services in public or private companies.

The program’s core subjects are in the fields of Sociology, Anthropology and Political Science, but, since the early stages, the student may choose to focus in one social area, by taking specific courses in this area.

Different segments of society are object of research, including the political system, public policies, social institutions and the business system, as well as social movements and socio-cultural diversity. Research is carried out in specialized places, such as the Laboratory of Image and Sound, where educational videos are also produced for the teaching and learning of social sciences.

The program offers two types of degree: one with focus on teaching (licenciatura) and the other focused on research and other career possibilities (bacharelado). For the second degree type, the program focuses on research, consulting, advice, and even on public or private policies management. In the last semester, the student must develop a final paper in the form of a dissertation. The teaching degree, in its turn, enables students to work in primary and secondary schools. For that, the student teacher takes pedagogical courses throughout the program and does a supervised internship (teaching practice) in an education institution.
