International ranking places UFSC among the best universities in the country in different subject areas

10/03/2021 13:51

The results of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021, an annual study by Quacquarelli Symonds, were published this Wednesday, 3 March, revealing the top universities for 51 different subjects, in five broad subject areas. The Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina was ranked in three out of the five subject areas: Arts and Humanities; Engineering and Technology; and Life Sciences and Medicine.

In Engineering and Technology, UFSC was ranked the third best among Brazilian federal universities and sixth best in Brazil, with emphasis on the subjects of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. In Arts and Humanities, UFSC is the fifth best among the federal universities and ninth best in Brazil, excelling in English Language and Literature, Architecture, and Linguistics. In Life Sciences and Medicine, UFSC is the sixth best among the federal universities and ninth best in Brazil, with emphasis on Agriculture and Forestry.

The area of Engineering and Technology had the best score, with 62.7 (ranked 368th among all universities); followed by Arts and Humanities, with 59.9 (ranked 400th in the global ranking); and Life Sciences and Medicine, with 56.8 (ranked between 401-450). The other broad subject areas were also evaluated, but the university was not ranked (it is uncommon, the study points out, for a university to be ranked in all five areas and subjects).

For the World University Rankings by Subject 2021, the QS team analyzed more than 13.9 million unique papers, producing around 81 million citations. The study ranked 1453 institutions.

Each university included in the 2021 rankings was evaluated based on four indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, and H-index, which measures the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar.

Check out UFSC’s performance in each indicator by broad subject area:

Subject Area Academic Employer Citations H-index Score
Arts and Humanities 63.4 54.9 63.4 45.5 59.9
Engineering and Technology 64.7 53.6 74.9 63.6 62.7
Life Sciences and Medicine 59.8 49.9 60.4 51.3 56.8

Methodology

The 2021 rankings analyzed about 14,000 individual university programs from 1,440 universities in 85 locations worldwide. The combination of the above indicators allows for the institution disseminating the rankings to measure how each university is seen externally and the quality of the academic activities carried out in that institution. The universities with the best performance in all four indicators are the ones top ranked in each individual subject.

UFSC researchers among the 100,000 top-cited scientists in the world

26/11/2020 20:50

A study carried out by Stanford University researchers, in the United States, identified the 100,000 top-cited scientists in the world. The study uses citations from the Scopus database until 2019, and it was published in the Journal Plos Biology on 16 October.

The study presents two different rankings, one that analyses the researcher’s career-long citation impact (see table S6), and another one that analyses citation impact during the year of 2019 (see table S7). The Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) has 15 researchers in the first ranking and 20 in the second one.

Career-Long Impact

According to the career-long citation impact ranking ‒ which assesses the scientist’s research impact throughout their whole career ‒ Brazil is represented by 600 researchers, and UFSC has 14 researchers ranked. They are (in the order of the ranking):

  • Benhard Welz, Department of Chemistry, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (CFM/UFSC)
  • Carlos Emanuel de Souza, Department of Electrical Engineering, School of Technology (CTC/UFSC)
  • Traugott Peter Wolf, Graduate Program in Medical Sciences, School of Health Sciences (CCS/UFSC)
  • Ruy Exel, Department of Mathematics, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (CFM/UFSC)
  • Rui Daniel Schröder Prediger, Department of Pharmacology, School of Biological Sciences (CCB/UFSC)
  • Ivo Barbi, Department of Electrical Engineering, School of Technology (CTC/UFSC)
  • Eduardo Carasek da Rocha, Department of Chemistry, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (CFM/UFSC)
  • Enedir Ghisi, Department of Civil Engineering, School of Technology (CTC/UFSC)
  • Alexandre Trofino Neto, Department of Automation and Systems, School of Technology (CTC/UFSC)
  • Rosendo Augusto Yunes, Department of Chemistry, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (CFM/UFSC)
  • Newton C. A. da Costa, Department of Philosophy, School of Philosophy and Human Sciences (CFH/UFSC)
  • Christian Johann Losso Hermes, Department of Mechanical Engineering, School of Technology (CTC/UFSC)
  • Denizar Martins, Department of Electrical Engineering, School of Technology (CTC/UFSC)
  • Marcelo Lobo Heldwein, Department of Electrical Engineering, School of Technology (CTC/UFSC)

2019 Impact

The table S7, which contains data regarding the single calendar year of 2019, presents 853 Brazilian scientists, of which 20 are UFSC researchers. They are:

The data presented in the tables includes all the scientists who are among the top 100,000 across all fields of study according to the composite citation index (when self-citations are included and/or when self-citations are not included). Furthermore, in the current update, tables S6 and S7 also include scientists who are not in the top 100,000 according to the composite index but are nevertheless within the top 2% of scientists of their main subfield discipline, across those that have published at least five papers.

The database created by the Stanford University scientists presents the top scientists in the world based on standardized citation metrics, such as information about citations, h-index, co-authorship, and a composite indicator.
